Touring Three Out of State Universities: Coram Deo Dallas’s Second Annual Rhetoric School College Tour

Katie Beth Pelley
Earlier this month Mr. Garrett Smith, College Guidance, accompanied a group of CDA Dallas Rhetoric Students on the second CDA Dallas College Tour. The group visited The University of Arkansas, John Brown University, and Oklahoma University.
Describing the purpose of the college tour, Mr. Smith says, “The goal for our college tours is for students to have the opportunity to experience various sizes and types of colleges and universities in Texas and the surrounding states.” He added, “I want the students to be able to picture themselves in these campus communities, and ultimately decide if this place may help them reach their college, career, and ministry goals.

CDA Dallas Sophomore, Gabe Gerth, recalls what was helpful about the tour, “There are very pronounced differences that exist between big, public universities and smaller, private universities and when you go on the college tour, you see colleges that showcase both models. Mr. Smith always does a great job of curating a well-balanced college tour.”

Addison Schultz, a CDA Dallas Sophomore, describes one of her favorite parts of the College Tour as, “being able to discuss the pros and cons of each college we visited and being able to share any takeaways we had with my classmates, teachers, and chaperones.”

Mr. Smith says that college planning discussions do not begin or end with a college tour. He shares that they are “just one tool” for helping students and families make the most informed decisions when planning for their future.

“Most people would agree that the college decision and application process is daunting.” Mr. Smith said. “I find so much joy in meeting students where they are, helping them process their goals, and seeing where God ultimately will call them to go!”
