Dear Coram Deo Academy Parent:
Get excited, Coram Deo Academy is participating in a dynamic, hands-on, civic education program for students in Washington, DC and Philadelphia! As educators, we are always looking for new and interesting ways to provide extra challenges and opportunities to enhance your students’ educational experience. We strongly believe that Close Up does just that and will provide a learning experience of a lifetime!
With over 40 years of experience, Close Up is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization; and they are driven by a mission to help students become more effective and informed citizens. Their lesson plans complement the curriculum that we focus on throughout the school year, and Close Up’s interactive teaching methods inspire and empower students. Although the Close Up is not specifically a Christian organization, CDA faculty will be joining the trip and will be meeting separately with our students to discuss the Christian worldview and talk about what they learned each day.
While in Washington, DC, on Close Up, your student will have the opportunity to live and learn with peers from around the country while engaging in seminars with policymakers and explorations of historical sites and government offices. This 5-day program prepares young citizens to meet the challenges of governing themselves and their nation through:
- Discussions of key domestic and international issues with members of Congress and their staff, Washington insiders, and other leading policy experts;
- Comprehensive study visits to the significant historical sites and cultural neighborhoods of our nation’s capital;
- Daily small-group workshops that encourage students to connect what they see in DC with what they are learning in the classroom back home;
- Self-directed time with their teachers to explore the nation’s capital; and
- Opportunity to earn college credit!
