Our Kenya Mission Trip Positively Affected Our Lives - Jack Powell

"The joy I experienced on a trip like this one cannot be described with words. It's summed up in the joy on each kid's face when they see you or play soccer with you." - CDA Student Jack Powell
One of the challenges of attending a school like CDA is the real world experiences we do not witness as a student. Although there are many advantages as a CDA student, our environment can create an ignorance to some of the suffering, darkness, and pain that some of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world endure. I did not realize the harsh reality of the world until I observed it at a deeper level. A couple results of seeing these difficult things are an appreciation for what God has already blessed me with and a desire to help those less fortunate than I.  I wanted to share this with my classmates.

Naomi's Village is an orphanage in Mahi Mahiu, Kenya that was started by the Mendonsas, a CDA family. It was started in 2011 and now has over 60 children. Cornerstone is another ministry started by the Mendonsas. It's a school that provides over 400 kids with a first-class education. The hope for both of these ministries is to train up leaders to go back into their communities and change the world for Christ. We visited several other ministries as well.

Everyone on this trip discovered something while we were there, whether it be a desire to complain less, a renewed trust in God's plan for their lives, or simply a changed view on rest of the world. I think it might be impossible to walk away from a trip like that and not be radically changed. One of the overwhelming reactions from the team was an intolerance for darkness and the clarity to see that we could make a difference. There is darkness just miles from our school and we saw that we can help by loving other. We don't need to have anything but Christ to do that. I personally received a lot of clarity that the calling God has placed on my life is for missions.

The joy I experienced on a trip like this one cannot be described with words. It's summed up in the joy on each kid's face when they see you or play soccer with you. It's summed up by the light so obviously infiltrating the darkness with each child's story of hope. It's summed up in the joyous worship of God from people who have nothing but Him. I think I see God's love best when I'm loving others and that's exactly what we did this trip.
