Grade 5

  • Bible: 5

CDA's Bible for the Classical Child: Stories from the Prophets and Kings completes our narrative study of scripture begun in 1st grade. Students will read from the Bible, narrating and discussing Old Testament history from the Saul, the first king  in I Samuel, to the return from exile. In addition student will memorize and recite key texts from scripture.
  • English/Literature: 5

This course requires that students actively read, annotate, discuss, and write about the Chronicles of Narnia and American literature set in the Civil War period and culminating in WWII.   A theme of this year’s literature is coming of age and perseverance in the midst of difficulties.

Using the Shurley Method English Grammar, students will develop the proper grammar mechanics for speaking and writing.

All instruction is based upon a Christian worldview where God is honored and uplifted. As we apply the moral imagination to understand this year’s reading, students will be challenged in their thinking and learn of God’s faithfulness, mercy, and love.
  • History: 5

Description: Fifth grade history covers American history from the 19th century through the twentieth century with a unit study of Texas history in quarter 4. Students will experience history as a collection of stories within a larger story as they discover and discuss what is true, good, and beautiful in history. Teachers are simply stewards of a narrative, feeding students’ desire to know the story and pointing them to the Great Author of the story. We focus daily on how the hand of God has shaped our nation and our world throughout the ages.
  • Latin/Grammar: 5

The study of language should lead the student to know and appreciate the orderliness of God through the written and spoken word.  In fifth-grade Latin, we build on the twin pillars of vocabulary and grammar, focusing primarily on nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Because Latin is an inflected language, words are made up of stems and endings which are regular and predictable.  By studying the structure of Latin, students understand more about grammatical structures in English.  As Eudora Welty states in One Writer’s Beginnings: “"It took Latin to thrust me into bona fide alliance with words in their true meaning.  Learning Latin...fed my love for words upon words, words in continuation and modification, and the beautiful accretion of a sentence....” (p. 31).  Logic-level Latin introduces students to the wonders of words!
  • Math Grade 5: 5

5th grade math focuses on foundational concepts such as integers, factors and multiples, fractions, decimals, proportions, and geometry and measurement. Students develop the major concepts through exploration and investigation, learn to think algebraically, and use precise mathematical language to model problems and communicate their ideas. Students are continually challenged to see patterns, and through this process develop the ability to solve progressively more difficult problems.
