Fine Arts

  • Beginning Guitar: FM

    Description: This is for students of all playing levels (beginners welcome!) interested in learning how to play the guitar. Basic chord, note reading, and fingerstyle playing will be covered in the course. Requirements: Homework: 25 minutes of practice, three days a week. Requirements: Curiosity and good participation skills are required for success in this class. Grading scale and Credit: ESN. GPA is not affected by ESN grades.
  • Bonum Cantare: CC Period 3

    Description: This is a great place for students to grow in their musical education. They will focus on more basic vocal music reading skills (using moveable do solfege) versus the formal theory lessons in Rhetoric School choir. Also, there is a focus on basic expressive elements--staccato, legato, phrasing, and vowel postures for singing. Students will learn sight-reading, music theory, and basic vocal technique. Students will learn three pieces of vocal music per semester with at least one joint piece sung with the Arte Contara Choir. Requirements: Students should expect homework and at-home rehearsal time. There will be quizzes in class. There are extra rehearsals scheduled either before or after school a few times per semester. Performance Expectations: Fall Concert, Spring Concert, Graduation (other opportunities for competitions are available). Special Notes: Notebook, notebook paper, pencil, colored pencils, and water bottle. Specific concert attire is required and will be purchased by parents through the school: Girls - Black long dresses. Boys - black pants, white tux shirts with bow ties (same as Symphonic Band). Students can retake this class each year. Grading Scale: ESN
  • Choir: Dallas

    Description: Choir is open to 5th graders and above. This group will perform in a Christmas and Spring concert and will learn how to read music and sing with good vocal technique. They will learn various types of repertoire from classical to pop and gain an understanding of music theory. Requirements: Homework: Weekly practice to learn the repertoire. Limited extra rehearsals to prepare for concerts. Performance Expectations: Fall Concert, Spring Concert (other opportunities for competitions are available). Grading Scale and Credit: ESN for students in the Logic school grades. GPA is not affected by ESN grades. Number grade for students in the rhetoric school grades. Class counts for a Musical Fine Arts graduation credit, appears on the transcript, and affects GPA.
  • Foundations of Drawing

    Description: Drawing is one of the most accessible art forms, since all it takes is pen and paper. This course will introduce student to the elements of design (line, shape, space, value, color), and how to use them when drawing. Students will practice a variety of techniques and styles as they experiment with this art form. Students will leave the class with additional skills to use in their approach to drawing, while enjoying the process of creating. Grading Scale: For Logic students, this is an ESN class. GPA is not affected by ESN grades.Â
  • Intro to Woodworking: Dallas

    Description: Over the course of the school year students will be introduced to the fundamentals of woodworking through personal hands-on learning and supplemental reading. They will develop basic skills in the use and maintenance of hand tools and power tools, finishing, hand-carving, as well as shop safety. This course will also expose students to the history and philosophy of fine woodworking while exploring the practice of handcraft as a spiritually forming discipline. Requirements: Homework: 60 minutes of outside class time for hand-carving Field Trips and Cost: The class will participate in some scheduled field trips to local woodshops, lumber yards, and woodworking supply stores. Students will pay an additional $100 supply fee, which will provide them with basic hand tools. Grading Scale and Credit: ESN for students in the Logic school. GPA is not affected by ESN grades. Number grade for students in the Rhetoric school. Class counts for a Visual Fine Arts graduation credit, appears on the transcript, and affects GPA.
  • Logic Musical Theatre: D

    Description: Outside work required Musical Theatre incorporates all aspects of performance for teenagers. This class will perform 2 musicals- a Christmas musical in December, and a spring musical in May. All participants will learn to audition for parts, work on memorizing lines, and use their God given instruments - their voices! Students will also learn about stage set up, production, and direction. Requirements: Grading Scale: This is an ESN class. GPA is not affected by ESN grades. Additional Rehearsals: Performances will require additional rehearsals outside of class time.
  • Logic Visual Art: D

    Description: In Logic Visual Art, students explore the seven elements of art (line, shape, form, space, value, texture, color) through more advanced projects. We study famous artists and delve into deeper discussion about famous artwork through the ages. We work on having a growth mindset by learning to focus on craftsmanship, but also acknowledging that mistakes are tools for learning and they increase our creativity. Every year there are new and different projects. Requirements: Grading Scale: For Logic students, this is an ESN class. GPA is not affected by ESN grades.Â
  • Theater Arts CCL: CC P3

    Description: Students will study the elements of drama which may include One Act plays, musicals and classic literature. Performance selection(s) will be made by the teacher in consideration of the students' talents. Some competitions may be required. Join us for 90 minutes of acting fun! Grading Scale: ESN Requirements: Note: An audition for acting roles will also be required. Non-acting roles could include set design and set up, developing director's book, makeup, hair, costume development, among other opportunities.
