How Morgan Showed Me God's Grace - Macy VanCuren

"My week with Morgan held a lot of obstacles, however, it was the ultimate example of God’s complete provision and grace. Every prayer I had for Morgan was answered..."

CDA Student Macy VanCuren shares her story of how one young lady impacted her life this summer.
Serving kids with special needs is something that I, along with many other Coram Deo students, look forward to experiencing every summer. The desire we have to love on these kids was developed at Camp Blessing Texas. Camp Blessing Texas is a summer camp that serves special needs children by giving them the best week of their lives. Every summer a group of Coram Deo students pick a week to go and love on the campers that come to Camp Blessing. This tasks involves being a counselor (buddy to a special camper), Jr. Counselor (helper to the counselors), or barnstormer (cleaning, serving meals, etc.). In doing this for only one week we are able to bless the parents of these children, be a friend to these special needs campers, and display to them the love of Christ like never before.
I have attended Camp Blessing every year for the past four summers and each year the Lord teaches me something new. However, this past summer I experienced at camp was the most life-changing of them all. I served as a counselor this year which means I was assigned a camper that I stayed with all week. This includes assisting in their morning routine, meals, activities, theme nights, and their night routine. My camper’s name was Morgan. Morgan was diagnosed with Rhett Syndrome, but that did not define her. She loved chairs and mirrors more than anything else in the world, her favorite activity was horseback riding, and she exemplified such incredible boldness in everything she did. Singing with Morgan as we walked to each activity, dancing to the ABC’s every morning before breakfast, and watching how much joy making new friends brought her far outweighed the lack of sleep, food, and energy that came with being her counselor.
My week with Morgan held a lot of obstacles, however, it was the ultimate example of God’s complete provision and grace. Every prayer I had for Morgan was answered, whether it be that she swim in the pool (for the first time ever!!!), go down the zip line, or go to bed when it was bedtime. This experience not only taught me how to rely on the Lord for strength and energy, but Morgan also taught me how to be deeply grateful for small mercies. In these ways, being Morgan’s buddy blessed me more than it could have ever blessed her.
Every year I attend Camp Blessing, chains are broken, lives are changed for the better, and hearts are completely sold out to the Lord. There is nothing more fulfilling than serving your brothers and sisters in Christ while deepening your relationship with God. So, for each and every one of you reading this, I want to encourage you to join Camp Blessing Texas in the ministry they are building or at least challenge you to go, love, and serve.
