A Glimpse at Three Texas Universities: Coram Deo Dallas’s First Overnight College Tour

Katie Beth Pelley
Last spring CDA Dallas rhetoric students took part in the very first overnight college tour. Over the weekend, students visited three different Texas universities.
Sixteen Dallas rhetoric students took part in the first Coram Deo Dallas overnight college tour on April 10-11, 2023. Students toured Texas A&M, Baylor, and Dallas Baptist University.

Garrett Smith, College Guidance at CDA Dallas, said, “The goal of the tour was to let students see what the different campuses have to offer.” Smith selected three distinct types of universities; public, large private and small private.

With the mission of CDA in mind, Smith organized tours that would highlight not only the academic side of college but also the spiritual side.

While touring Texas A&M, students attended an admission meeting and had the opportunity to hear from BYX Christian Fraternity, Aggies Sisters for Christ, and The Baptist Student Ministry. Students were able to ask questions and get real answers from ministry leaders on campus.

I wanted to give them a glimpse of college aged students at a large public school, doing ministry,” Smith said. “I wanted them to see some of the different opportunities available and realize that these student leaders were in their shoes not long ago.”

CDA students were given the opportunity to take a personalized tour of Baylor and DBU. At Baylor they even got an exclusive tour of Baylor’s McLane Stadium. “The college tour was helpful because I got to visit colleges I might not otherwise have visited,” said Lauren Fulmer, rhetoric student.

Students had the opportunity to discuss specific majors with their tour guides and get real time, relevant information pertaining to their major of interest. “I got to hear about what an education major looks like at each of the colleges we visited and that was very helpful to start thinking about,” Landry Hillner, rhetoric student said.

When asked what she thought of the tour Hillner said, “I enjoyed looking into the college world with friends. It was both a blast and super educational. It helped me to plan out what size I am looking for in a college. I now know that I am more interested in a smaller college after experiencing all three colleges during the tour.”

Thank you to the students and chaperones for such a great trip!
