Theology

Theological education at Coram Deo Academy takes place in two distinct and complementary ways: direct classroom instruction, and an integration of a Christian worldview and lifestyle into all areas of our school life. Beyond the classroom, students enter into relationships with teachers, staff, and coaches who all strive to model a life lived in the presence of God. In this sense we see theological education at Coram Deo as modeling Paul’s ministry with the church in Thessalonica:
We care so deeply for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.
~1 Thessalonians 2:8

In the Grammar School classrooms, students are presented with a curriculum that serves as an overview of the story of our Scriptures and the spread of the early Church. By 5th grade, students are learning important background information about some of the authors of our New Testament books, and are presented with ways to relate the narrative and teaching of Scripture to their own worlds.

In the Logic and Upper School classrooms, there is an intentional shift away from Bible courses in every grade level and towards integration of the Christian worldview into all subjects. Our Math, History, English, Science, and Electives all cover theological concepts appropriate to their discipline. Our goal in doing this is to fight the tendency to compartmentalize the Christian life. We want to teach our students to see all of life through the lens of the Christian gospel.

Our goal... is to fight the tendency to compartmentalize the Christian life. We want to teach our students to see all of life through the lens of the Christian gospel.

In an attempt to ensure that our students graduate with a solid foundation, we do require two core Theology courses in our Upper School: 10th grade Theology I, and 12th grade Theology II. In Theology I, students are presented with an overview of the Nicene Creed, study a biblical text, and cover topics ranging from the doctrine of the incarnation to vocation and calling. In Theology II, students explore the rich history of Christian thinking and imagination, and engage in research and discussions about topics such as the resurrection of Jesus, the problem of evil and the relationship between science and faith. In this final year our students continue to move from not only understanding our faith, but also communicating it through their words, habits, and lifestyles.
