Grade 4

Fourth grade at Coram Deo Academy is the final year of Grammar School. As we prepare students to move on to Logic School, fourth grade solidifies the firm foundation that is needed. It is exciting to see children continue to absorb a wealth of knowledge at this age—knowledge that they will take with them as they begin to think more abstractly and ask “Why?”.
  • Bible: 4

CDA's Bible for the Classical Child: Stories Joshua to Samuel is designed to maximize the child’s opportunity to personally encounter and increase the knowledge of the scriptures through the art of narration. In addition student will memorize and recite key texts from scripture.
  • Grammar/Vocab: 4

Students continue to learn and practice four-part analysis of English grammar including parts of speech, parts of a sentence, phrases, and clauses. Through engaging stories, art, and poetry, students learn about nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections as well as each of their functions in a sentence. Students expand their knowledge of phrases and practice analyzing increasingly complex sentences. Additionally, students acquire vocabulary rooted in the language and culture of the ancient Romans, with readings and activities that highlight the ancient world and its contributions to our modern English language.
  • History: 4

History and literature in fourth grade focus on American History starting with the early explorers and ending with the War of 1812. Students love learning about the history of their own country and the virtues and leadership of historical figures that established this great nation. Our literature books deepen our students’ understanding of the historical period and their love of great literature.
  • Latin Foundations: 4

In fourth grade, Latin focuses on learning the basics of using nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions. Students also begin to learn how to conjugate verbs and decline nouns. The major focus throughout the year is to continue to build a strong vocabulary and mastery of words introduced in lessons to prepare them for the next level of Latin study.
  • Math: 4

Basic computation skills and problem solving are emphasized and students use those skills to work through the challenging math curriculum. They enjoy learning problem solving strategies and working through many computation problems throughout the year as they develop into strong mathematicians.
  • Penmanship: 4

Handwriting continues to be practiced in fourth grade, and students are expected to use cursive on all assignments as they utilize their handwriting skills. Beautiful penmanship is a wonderful thing!
  • Spelling/Writing: 4

Language skills are strengthened as children study vocabulary and learn how the English language is organized. Children classify sentences, labeling parts of speech as they work through the question flows taught in grammar. Students continue to develop their writing skills as they continue in the Progymnasmata, the basis for Classical Writing curriculum.
  • Spelling: 4

In fourth grade, spelling works closely with vocabulary. Students build their vocabulary by learning the meaning and use of words while learning how to spell words that follow both phonetic and irregular patterns. They not only learn to spell, but how to utilize the words effectively through writing and speaking in context.
