Grammar (PreK–4th)

Grammar School at CDA

Welcome to the Grammar School at CDA, where PreK4 – 4th grade students begin their journey. In the grammar stage of learning, young minds build a strong foundation by mastering essential skills and facts in joyful, engaging ways. Children delight in learning through songs, chants, and jingles while practicing scripture memory, phonics and spelling skills, math facts, early Latin vocabulary, handwriting skills, and recalling pivotal historical dates. This stage nurtures curiosity and wonder, while giving students the tools they need for the logic and rhetoric stages that follow.

Grammar School Curriculum

Pre-K

Coram Deo Academy's PreK program provides a safe and loving environment where children thrive as they learn and grow in a joyful and nurturing atmosphere. Our youngest students participate in fun and engaging activities that introduce them to the wonderful world of learning. Through these individual and group activities, students are taught phonics, handwriting, and math. Bible and history are taught through the art of storytelling.

Kindergarten

At Coram Deo Academy, Kindergarten is a wonderful place to see the trademarks of a classical education. Through rhythm, rhyme, chant and song, students begin to plant basic facts about math, phonics, Bible, and geography deep in the fertile soil of their minds. These facts will begin to flourish into deeper understanding and application as children grow into lifelong learners. Storytelling is used to provide context to those facts and to develop a love of literature in our emerging readers.

1st Grade

First grade students at Coram Deo Academy begin to flourish academically as the seeds of knowledge planted in Kindergarten are reinforced and developed. Through rhythm, rhyme, chant, storytelling and song, students grow in their knowledge of math, phonics, grammar, Bible, and History.

2nd Grade

In second grade, seeds planted in previous years push through the soil and begin to send out deeper roots. Using the tools of narration, rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, second grade students continue to develop a love of learning as they grow.

3rd Grade

Third grade at Coram Deo Academy is a year of growing in God’s presence. Students grow academically and socially as they strive to see God at work in all areas of their lives. God is present in every subject matter and every lesson. It is a true joy when students begin to recognize and proclaim the presence and greatness of God.

4th Grade

Fourth grade at Coram Deo Academy is the final year of Grammar School. As we prepare students to move on to Logic School, fourth grade solidifies the firm foundation that is needed. It is exciting to see children continue to absorb a wealth of knowledge at this age—knowledge that they will take with them as they begin to think more abstractly and ask “Why?”.

"The curriculum in Pre-K is effective, and the teaching is outstanding! Students go on nature walks and draw pictures while having fun learning numbers and letters—that’s exactly what Pre-K students should do. They should enjoy learning."

Number Reasoning

Number reasoning is a cornerstone of the curriculum, emphasizing mental math, memorization of math facts, and a deep understanding of the logical relationships between numbers. Students learn to think critically and solve problems with a variety of methods and algorithms. As they continue through the Grammar School, students learn to collaborate and engage in meaningful discourse over numbers and mathematical expressions. This discipline builds a strong foundation for higher mathematics and scientific thinking.

Explicit Phonics Instruction

Phonics is the primary method for teaching reading, focusing on the sounds of letters and letter combinations. CDA follows a systematic approach to give students the tools to decode new words independently and become proficient readers. It lays the groundwork for spelling, vocabulary, and confident communication.

History as a Story

History is presented as a series of compelling stories and memorable events placed in context on a timeline. This narrative approach helps students connect with the past and understand the progression of human civilization under the providence of God. Each year is anchored by a festival in which students present key events, people, and songs from the time period studied. By reenacting key moments and traditions, students internalize history and its lessons.

Family Bible Lessons

Families are encouraged to read Scripture together with all children daily through our Bible home lessons. The family bond is strengthened a parents read to the family and children narrate key stories from the Bible. The discussion in the home is the cornerstone of spiritual growth as parents serve as primary disciple-makers in our collaborative model.

Musical and Arts Education

Musical and arts education is a vital part of a student's holistic development, fostering creativity and an appreciation for Beauty. Students develop wonder through exposure to classical music, hymns, and fine art in the classroom and on home days. This discipline refines the soul and enhances the ability to perceive and create order and beauty in the world. Additionally, students participate in a robust elective program for enrichment on Fridays.

Physical Development

Physical development is treated as an essential part of a classical curriculum, emphasizing discipline and character-building through sports and play. Activities are designed to teach teamwork, perseverance, and respect for others. It ensures students develop healthy bodies and learn the virtues of self-control and good sportsmanship.
