Sports Performance Program Builds Athletes and Character
The beauty of sports can transcend time and provide memorable moments that display great skill and ability. These attributes are facilitated by hard work and what is now termed as performance training. Recognizing the value of this essential concept, CDA’s athletics department has launched a comprehensive Sports Performance program to prioritize and invest in the athletic abilities of our students.
Building Athletes and Character
“We’re building a foundation for our athletes, scaling from 5th graders to graduating seniors,” said Jeff Cornell, Athletic Director at CDA Flower Mound. The Sports Performance program offers a schedule based on volume and intensity that spans over 6-week cycles.
“From technique and strength to speed and power, each cycle focuses on principles that allow us to scaffold the athlete’s preparation for every season. The purpose of our athletics program is not only to build athletes, but also the character and values of an ethical servant-leaders,” said Brandon Haygood, Program Director for the Sports Performance program. “Any opportunity we get to minister and pour into the kids, we should seize the moment. This is more than just what we do, but who we are,” Cornell added.
Each week the program incorporates a spiritual and leadership theme that correlates with training. So far, there’s been great buy-in from CDA families! Hundreds of athletes attend performance sessions every week, flowing from the weight room to the new auxiliary turf area outside the Lyceum. Thanks to generous donors, the program now has additional training space and is in the process of obtaining a full length Sun Sail for added protection.
Growing Physically, Mentally, and Spiritually
An athlete’s ability to demonstrate proficiency in their sport among various factors determines their performance level. A greater performance level gives each athlete the confidence and the tools needed to grow in their sport. Consider it their transmission or ability to change gears—with it they’re capable of healthy competition with peers and opposing teams.
To help athletes understand their current gear and desired destination, CDA coaches train them to meet the demands of competition, maximize skill potential, and develop passion for their sport. The goal is to motivate each athlete to reach their potential and learn more about who they are while chasing the best version of themselves.
"The success we seek goes beyond wins and losses. It requires trust and relationship with every one of our athletes,” said Haygood. As the Sports Performance program continues to grow, so does the trust and camaraderie among students. Each session is marked by hard work, encouragement, and a shared sense of purpose. Students challenge themselves and cheer each other on with excitement and confidence. “When we walk through the halls and hear students say things like, ‘Coach, I’m coming to Sports Performance today,’ or ask, ‘Can we do the 1,000-rep challenge?’ it’s a clear sign we’re on the right path,” Haygood added.
