Modifications to Summer Reading
Coram Deo Academy’s English co-chairs and grammar directors have collaborated to revise the summer reading program. The changes shown below are intended to foster a continued love for reading and great literature. We are excited about the addition of the Milliarium Aureum (Golden Milestone) Summer Reading Award which encourages students toward literary scholarship during the summer months.
The summer reading books have been carefully chosen to complete our school year curriculum, to create a shared culture, to foster the development of lifelong learners, and to enrich the moral and spiritual development of our students.
School-wide Bible Selection: The Gospel of Matthew
Coram Deo desires our students to have a shared study of a specific book of the Bible during the summer, so that when they return in the fall they have a shared spiritual foundation on which to begin the school year. This also allows students in various grades to spend time collaboratively studying God’s Word with parental direction and instruction. Suggested commentaries for family use are- Matthew’s Gospel (Opening Up) by Ian D. Campbell and Matthew for Everyone Part 1 and Part 2 by N. T. Wright.
Grammar Level Reading (Grades K-4)
The Grammar School Summer Book List is based on authors’ series to encourage young readers to read more books over the summer. Children’s books that come in a series allow the author to develop more complex characters and plots which help capture a child’s attention, imagination and interest. Character themes are included for each grade level to enrich literary discussions with children. Parents are welcome to read aloud with the student according to the child’s reading ability. The goal for grammar level summer reading is to inspire students to have fun reading this summer. There are no minimum requirements. Students should be encouraged to read for enjoyment during the summer months, and the list is simply suggested literature to consider.
Logic Level Reading (Grades 5-8)
The Logic Level Summer Reading Book List requirements have been significantly reduced. Fifth and sixth graders are required to read only two books this summer, and students in seventh and eighth grade will have the ability to choose a third book from a list. The summer reading book reports are no longer required. Instead, teachers will employ a variety of review methods after school has resumed.
High School Reading (Grades 9-12)
The High School Summer Reading Book List requirements have also been significantly reduced. When making the reductions, book length was taken into consideration. While the number of books required in these grades varies, the length of the books was compared to make the requirement as equitable as possible. The summer reading dialectical journals have been eliminated. Instead, teachers will employ a variety of review methods after school has resumed.
